Tripoli today, he remarked offhandedly to his guests, is like the Pakistani frontier town of Peshawar that, during the Soviet Union’s occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, acted as an integral hub for organizing fighters, arms and intelligence for the mujahedeen’s. The sheik’s comment was perhaps hyperbole, but strong connections between Tripoli and the conflict next door in Syria do exist, and they have solidified over time. Both fighters and arms have flowed from the city to the Syrian rebels trying to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
